NURSES on Christmas Island are threatening to disrupt the transfer off the territory of asylum-seekers by refusing to carry out health checks unless the federal government pays them the same as their mainland colleagues.
The Christmas Island nurses claim their heavy workload is a direct result of the government's decision to run the island as an immigration detention centre, but they are being paid $7500 less a year than nurses on the mainland.
